Greetings, Friends of Elijah's Heart!

Please read this important message affecting thousands of hungry kids in the Nashville area and millions nationally.

The nationally recognized premier organization for providing food, the USDA (United States Dept. of Agriculture,) published the following excerpt about its program. Allow this information to give perspective on the significant and persistent need for contributions to address child hunger in our country.  

“The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free meals to children in low-income areas through eligible organizations, primarily in the summer months when most schools are closed for instruction. In fiscal year (FY) 2023, the program served a total of 136 million meals at a cost of about $547 million. In July 2023, the month when SFSP operations typically peak, the program provided meals to 2.2 million children each day across more than 35,000 sites.

USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) administers SFSP sites. USDA was established to help poor children as far back as 1968! SFSP sites include: schools, camps, parks, playgrounds, housing projects, community centers, churches, and other public sites where children gather in the summer.”

Just think. During Spring Break we distributed over 300 lunches on just one side of our large community in one hour! Now imagine all the hungry children needing food for the 10 weeks of summer break! The majority of the food we received last year also came from the Summer Food Service Program with additional food and various other summer lunch costs purchased through your generous donations.

Summer break is right around the corner at the end of May! With the largest source of summer lunch food unavailable for the first time in nearly half a century, we need to negotiate bulk food prices right away. We have hope for another amazing summer with fun and enriching activities for the children planned for you to lock arms with us as always, but none of that will be possible without raising funds in this unusual season in history.
